| DAY 1
- JOBURG / MAUN / OKAVANGO DELTA - VUMBURA RESERVE
|
|
Arrive into Johannesburg this morning off your international flight. After clearing customs you will be met and assisted aboard your Air Botswana flight BP212 departing at 10:00am and arriving in Maun, Botswana at 11:40am. When you arrive you will be met and flown by light aircraft to Vumbura Plains Camp - a luxury tented camp situated to the north of Mombo, in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. The entire camp overlooks a vast floodplain and the rooms are built under the canopy of cool shade trees. All 14 of the luxury tented rooms are raised off the ground on wooden platforms with walkways connecting them to the main living areas. Each luxury tented room has a large, very comfortable bedroom, a lounge, a "sala" and en-suite facilities with a shower, bath, a flush toilet and an outdoor shower under the stars. The main dining, lounge and pub area is also raised off the ground and tucked beneath a canopy of shady, indigenous trees with a wonderful vista across the floodplains. Each room has its own plunge pool. Access into this area is only by aircraft and then by vehicle to camp.
You will have your first chance to spot wildlife on the way from the airstrip to the camp, arriving in time for lunch. After a chance to rest up you will depart on a late afternoon game drive, returning to camp after dark.
The Vumbura Reserve offers both land and water activities with a wonderful variety of habitats and a great diversity of wildlife. Within this vast area of close to 130,000 acres, you will enjoy game viewing in open 4x4 Land Rovers which allow close proximity to animals in the savannah and forested areas. This is one of the few areas in the Okavango where one can see Red Lechwe (an animal that inhabits the fringes of the waterways) and a Sable antelope (an animal that enjoys the dry countryside) on the same game drive. Add in Lion, Leopard, Elephant, cheetah and Buffalo along with all the plains animals and one has an excellent all round wildlife experience in a remote and private part of the Okavango. Birding too is great with large varieties and quantities. Guided walks, mokoros and boating give Vumbura's guests the opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective.

This morning you’ll depart by light aircraft to the Moremi Reserve where you will spend three nights on safari at the amazing and renowned Mombo Camp. The remote Mombo Camp lies deep within Moremi Wildlife Reserve, within the Okavango Delta, at the northwestern tip of Chief's Island. The island is surrounded by open floodplains and the camp itself is largely built in and around the shade of some large matgosteen, ebony and fig trees - overlooking a wonderful floodplain teeming with game.
The camp has nine luxuriously furnished tents, raised off the ground. The guests' rooms and connecting walkways are up to 6 feet off the ground, allowing wildlife to wander freely through the camp - but at the same time allowing for guest safety. One often finds that animals take refuge under the rooms. The canvas rooms are spacious and well appointed and have en-suite facilities with an additional outdoor shower for those who enjoy a shower under the stars. The dining room, pub and living area overlook the open plain in front of the camp and there is a plunge pool for relaxing in the heat of the day.
Activities at Mombo include morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. The camp offers abundant big game viewing, arguably the best in Botswana. The highlight is the concentration of plains game and all the predators - including the big cats. This is also one of the few areas in Botswana where you will have a chance to spot the rare White Rhino. Lion sightings are particularly good. Guests could also see Leopard, large herds of Buffalo, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Elephant, , Hyena, Giraffe, Wildebeest and Zebra.
